Martial Arts

The SMAC martial arts program is a blend of traditional and cutting edge martial arts. It is essentially a two-fold program. Half of the program consists of the FULL study of taekwondo, a Korean martial art that translates as “the way of the foot and hand”, while the other half is a “sprinkling” of boxing, muay thai, judo, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and hapkido in an effort to expose the students to other martial arts (available at SMAC) and self defense skills. The goal is to develop both mind and body. The training in this program will provide the participant with the behavioral skills associated with traditional martial arts (modesty, integrity, perseverance, patience, self control, indomitable spirit) as well as real world self defense. Classes are available for children and adults.

Benefits of the styles

Taekwondo – Powerful and unique kicks

Boxing – Strong punching power

Muay Thai – Devastating knees and elbows

Judo – Takedowns to get the fight to the ground

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – A plethora of submission skills to finish an attacker

Hapkido – A variety of wristlocks/joint manipulations to control an opponent

BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

BJJ exploded in popularity in the early 90′s after its effectiveness was proven in the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC). The legendary Gracie family of Brazil had developed the art from traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu and Judo. It is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling/ground fighting. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant using joint locks and chokeholds. BJJ can be trained for self defense, fitness, sport grappling, and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Classes are available for children and adults.

KICKBOXING

Kickboxing is a fusion of boxing, karate, and muay thai. It is a striking art that emphasizes the use of hands, elbows, knees, and legs to deliver powerful, debilitating blows to an opponent. It can be practiced for fitness, fun, and competition. It has become an integral part in mixed martial arts competition as well.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

MMA blends the styles of Brazilian jiu jitsu, muay thai, boxing, wrestling, judo, and various other fighting systems for the purpose of fighting competition. The sport is characterized by well conditioned athletes who have a wide variety of knowledge in both the striking and grappling elements of fighting.

SPORT KARATE

Sport karate is the application of martial arts techniques in a competitive tournament environment. A competitor can participate in a variety of forms and sparring competitions. Students in the class should first participate in the martial arts program and possibly the extreme martial arts program to form a strong foundation.

EXTREME MARTIAL ARTS

Extreme martial arts is a fusion of traditional martial arts mixed with acrobatics and tumbling. Students learn foundational techniques of karate and tumbling, and learn to take those techniques to the extreme!
